As one of the largest energy-consuming sectors, transportation has a 40-per cent share of the total energy consumption in Iran. A host of benefits including lower pollution, lower fuel consumption, and a higher level of safety have turned railway electrification into the center of attention. In addition, a shift from traditional railway systems to modern electric railways improves the transport capacity, and ultimately leads to higher efficiency in country’s infrastructures.
In 2014, MAPNA Group signed a contract agreement with Islamic Republic of Iran Railway to electrify and modernize Tehran-Mashhad line of 900km length. The project will improve the speed of trains to 200km/h, reducing the time spent en route to 6 hours.
